Our grandsons Ethan and Edison came to stay with Papaw and Mamaw for 10 days recently. I said to my husband Jim when their visit was confirmed, “Great! Let’s teach the boys determination!!” We definitely want them to be as stubborn and bull headed as we are. Oh yes we do. We definitely do.
You see we were disturbed by their level of follow through when the going gets tough so to speak. At first, it was an unwillingness to ride a bike if it was physically demanding or there could be a fall of any kind. Then, it seemed to be snowballing into reports of “The boys don’t like to be out in the cold. They’d rather be snuggled up inside and warm with a cup of hot chocolate.” and well, you get the idea…
So, hut two three four, to Mamaw and Papaw’s they came. The boys arrived under the pretense of celebrating a late Christmas due to distance. When at last we were all together again, little two year old Edison defiantly announced “Santa is fake! ….. Santa is FAKE!!” I had already been warned by my daughter Stephany that she felt it important that the boys not become confused about Jesus by believing in Santa. My grandson “Older than five Ethan” knowingly looked on with approval at his little brothers’ assertion. Jim and I later tried to present the snowshoes that Santa had left the boys but it was futile. The bit about Santa being limited to the frigid, winter land of northern Minnesota would have made some inroads with little Edison but not older than five Ethan. He took two steps back and lifted an eyebrow of disapproval that his grandparents would reach such lows as lie to him and his little brother. My husband and I looked exasperated at each other knowing it just wasn’t worth sliding further onto this thin ice we found ourselves on.
We had our first instruction the next day with the very un-controversial activity called sleigh riding down the icy, snow covered driveway. We first versed them in wearing layers for comfort. They learned the importance of stuffing their gloves inside coat sleeve elastic, the importance of the northern ‘gator’ for their neck protection, and not just stocking hats but knit hats with tabs down to their collarbones to cover tender ears and cheeks. Next, came “the hill”. We focused on form and technique, placement of the rope and it’s use, the wisdom of ‘ditching’ if they slide out of control toward a tree, etc… etc…
They were frustrated at times, Ethan kept forgetting the placement of the rope both up and down hill. Edison lost patience at all the effort it took to maneuver uphill. Once, he almost stormed away sure I had betrayed him by accelerating his fall to the ground in front of the sleigh. Ethan cut through the Dutch language barrier I was experiencing with Edison’s excited scorn, “He thinks you did it on PURPOSE?!.” That too became a lesson in “Never give up.” I coaxed Edison back to the peak of that hill and with determination he once again committed to have fun on the sled.
But then, it all came together when we just wouldn’t accept a failure to have sleigh riding fun. They were naturals. Why they flew down the hill. Older than five Ethan proudly announced his desire to go up and then down the hill again and little Edison belly laughed all the way down sitting face first into the wind in front of his big brother for added weight and speed. We were pleased that they had completed their first day of Camp Determination. I smiled to myself knowing it was on to snowshoes tomorrow…
And so I’ll leave you now to the rest of your day. The saga of the snowshoes is a whole other story…

Please forward this to everyone you care about… CNN and the other major news outlets will be releasing this story in the coming days and weeks. This new study is going to change the way we all think of vitamins and supplements – and the companies that manufacture and market them.
Peer Review of a recent clinical study conducted by the University of California Berkeley has been completed. This study has been dubbed the “Landmark Study” and will be the groundbreaking baseline for future clinical studies.
Shaklee Corporation based in Pleasonton, CA came out on top of it’s game as the ONLY company that has proof their vitamins and supplements work and have an impact on disease states.
The table below summarizes some of the key Landmark Study findings. Read on to access the PDF link at the end of this article for the full report.
The numbers are fascinating. You’ll see that taking no multi-vitamin may be safer than taking other company brands. Shaklee Corporation came out of the study with bragging rights that it’s users had markedly lower incidence of coronary heart disease, angina, congestive heart failure, diabetes, stroke and emphysema not to mention lower homocysteine, LDL,(bad cholesterol), Triglycerides and higher HDL (good cholesterol).

Nutrition Journal 2007, 6:30doi:10.1186/1475-2891-6-30
Usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users: a cross-sectional study:
Abstract (provisional) Published October 24, 2007
Dietary supplement use in the United States is prevalent and represents an important source of nutrition. However, little is known about individuals who routinely consume multiple dietary supplements. This study describes the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users, and where possible makes comparisons to non-users and multivitamin/mineral supplement users.
Using a cross-sectional study design, information was obtained by online questionnaires and physical examination (fasting blood, blood pressure, body weight) from a convenience sample of long-term users of multiple dietary supplements manufactured by Shaklee Corporation (Multiple Supp users, n=278). Data for non-users (No Supp users, n=602) and multivitamin/mineral supplement users (Single Supp users, n=176) were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002 and NHANES III 1988-1994. Logistic regression methods were used to estimate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.
Dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50% of Multiple Supp users included a multivitamin/mineral, B-complex, vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin E, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, lecithin, alfalfa, coenzyme Q10 with resveratrol, glucosamine, and a herbal immune supplement. The majority of women also consumed gamma linolenic acid and a probiotic supplement, whereas men also consumed zinc, garlic, saw palmetto, and a soy protein supplement. Serum nutrient concentrations generally increased with increasing dietary supplement use. After adjustment for age, gender, income, education and body mass index, greater degree of supplement use was associated with more favorable concentrations of serum homocysteine, C-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as lower risk of prevalent elevated blood pressure and diabetes.
This group of long-term multiple dietary supplement users consumed a broad array of vitamin/mineral, herbal, and condition-specific dietary supplements on a daily basis. They were more likely to have optimal concentrations of chronic disease-related biomarkers, and less likely to have suboptimal blood nutrient concentrations, elevated blood pressure, and diabetes compared to non-users and multivitamin/mineral users. These findings should be confirmed by studying the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of other groups of heavy users of dietary supplements.

My husband grew up in California. It is still home to his family and they have lived in northern San Diego for many years. At one point during the coverage of the fires this week I was sure I saw them in a stadium bleary eyed and arms crossed. I called my husband to confirm. Well, he watched for awhile and saw what I meant but it was not them. They had fled to a comfortable family members home and were out of harms way. If the fire wouldn’t have turned due to a shift in the wind direction – their home would have been lost. Fortunately for them, everyone is back home and all is intact.
I remember when my daughter Stephany was 6 years old she was making a peanut butter sandwich with her big sister in the kitchen with her. I was a couple of rooms away. My daughter Dawn came running into my room in a panic and said that Stephany was on fire. I rushed into the kitchen to find her sleeve in flames and I grabbed her and shoved her arm under the water faucet. I saw the burns on her hand and sleeve and called 911 in an absolute panic. Normally I’m calm in emergency situations – fire terrifies me.
God bless the firemen. They came rushing in on that cold, snowy day and appraised the situation. Stephany had been sledding and so her little arm had been protected by 2 layers of heavy clothing. She had received 2nd degree burns on her hand .
I salute all the heroes in California this week and want everyone that suffered losses to know that our family is praying for them. Stay safe and protect your health the best you can by wearing respirator masks and staying indoors. Use an air purifier that will remove the smoke from your indoor air if you can. Our business delivers right to your door and we have a mobile unit for your car or hotel room and a larger unit that will cover up to 3000 sq feet.
Rest heals and restores the body so try to get extra during this time of high stress. It’s important to take B vitamins and calcium magnesium to help calm frazzled nerves. It is a devastating situation of incomprehensible proportion. And again, God Bless the Firemen for risking their lives to stand down the fires.
