Depression – Natural Approaches

DepressionNatural Approaches

Contributing Factors

1. Candida Yeast Infections

Yeasts, which naturally occur on skin and our intestinal tract, often grow out of control due to antibiotics, steroid-based or hormonal medications or diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. These yeast organisms produce toxins which can migrate out of the gut (leaky gut syndrome) and cause adverse reactions in the digestive system (gas, bloating, belching, mucous in stools, rectal itching, constipation and/or diarrhea), can cause emotional symptoms, (depression, lack of focus, poor memory, PMS, anxiety or frequent crying, dizziness or lack of coordination) and weaken the immune system.

Shaklee Optiflora System – (Acidophilus and Bifidus) – to re-inoculate the lower intestine with friendly microorganisms to restore a healthy environment and reduce yeast growth. Requires no refrigeration and its triple encapsulation protects it from stomach acids that destroy most acidophilus products including yogurt

Shaklee Premium Garlic Complexhelps kill intestinal parasites and yeasts, has natural anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

          2.   Fluctuating Blood Sugar Levels

The brain requires a steady supply of blood sugar in order to function properly.  However, many foods in the American diet cause blood sugar to fluctuate wildly, especially foods high in sugar, white flour, caffeine or alcohol and other refined carbohydrates and snacks.

Foods that stabilize blood sugar are high in protein (meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts, beans and soy) and fiber (fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains). The best nutrients to help regulate blood sugar are:

 Shaklee B Complex

Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein or Mealshake or Cinch Shakes & bars or Soy Mix

Shaklee Fiber Plan Daily Mix or Fiber Plan Crunch or Fiber Tabs

Glucose Regulation Complex – unique blend of herbs, minerals and anti-oxidants that help promote efficient glucose utilization,  & helps sustain energy and prevent blood sugar crashes that can cause carbohydrate cravings.

3.  Deficiencies in Nutrients Essential for Brain, Nervous System & to Balance Hormones

   B Complex

OsteoMatrix, VitalMag and Chewable Cal Mag Plus– (Calcium Magnesium)

Omega Guard Omega-3 Complex– (Omega 3 Fatty Acid) – essential for the brain, this remarkable combination of EPA and DHA produce prostaglandins which can reduce triglycerides, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.

   GLA Complex– (gamma linolenic acid)

OR

most of the above is available in Shaklee Vitalizer ..a 30-day supply of 80 essential nutrients

4. Herbal Recommendations

Shaklee Moodlift Complex- (St John’s Wort)  contains standardized extract of hypericin, a natural plant compound found to be a very effective anti-depressant in clinical studies. Researchers reported improvement in depression, anxiety, insomnia, and self-esteem with no adverse side effects.  In addition, Moodlift contains inositol to improve nerve transmission, found in scientific studies to be low in people who experience melancholy.

Mental Acuity Complex (Ginkgo Biloba) -Ginkgo is renown for improving blood circulation to the brain and thus improving memory and mental quickness.  Along with Bilberry, Hawthorn and Rosemary extracts, it is also often used to improve depression, vertigo, eye health and blood clots in the legs.

Shaklee CorEnergy – contains

Ginseng, adaptogenic herb used traditionally to revitalize and replenish vital energy, one of most prized of all herbs.

Green tea extract the richest source of antioxidant nutrients called polyphenols, known for cancer prevention.

Cordyceps a highly valued Chinese mushroom found thru extensive clinical trials to fight every day fatigue.

Together these herbs strengthen and replenish the adrenal glands, often exhausted from stress, and increase mental vigor and concentration, improves sexual function, kidney health, liver and cardiovascular health.

Dietary Recommendations:  It is critical to increase fresh vegetables and fruits .. and reduce sweets and snacky, carbohydrate, high-glycemic chips, crackers, baked goods, breads and pastas. Create delicious main dish salads with a wide variety of ingredients …

Protein-rich foods (chicken, turkey, cheese, … nuts, sunflower seeds, pepitas  (pumpkin seeds ) sesame seeds

Varieties of lettuce …

Lightly steamed green beans or asparagus, sprouts, mushrooms, cucumbers, watercress, baby bok choy… for interesting added tastes try orange sections, dried cranberries or cherries, strawberries or apple or pear slices

Earth Day 2008 with Our Green Business

Will you make a decision to turn a deeper shade of green on April 22nd?

I’ve been scrambling to help my green business owners get ready for Earth Day 2008.  In a Shaklee home business, April is a month of celebration as people focus on becoming a deeper shade of green.  Coincidentally, Shaklee has also kicked off a campaign to support women entrepreneurs build wealth with Shaklee.  April is winding up to be a GREAT month and the best yet for our business in 2008!

I own a consulting practice that has been on coast since I found the greenest company I know and hung up my Shaklee shingle.  I talked with a former business associate today.  She has some project management work in Mexico City they need help with.  “Would you fly every week?” she asked.  And then I thought about all that carbon footprint from jet fuel.  “No, I would come back perhaps every three weeks.”

The IT and Financial corporate clients that I have spent my career assisting have lost the appeal that once drew me to the business.  I found myself thinking “But what about my new Gold Ambassador needing my help to get her business off the ground?”  She’s a stay at home Mom of four young children and preparing for the financial storm of change coming to her and her children.

Our Chiropractor has introduced Shaklee supplementation and non-toxic products into his practice.  We’re planning an Open House to the public on April 22nd.  We will educate about the dangers of 83,000 untested chemicals on store shelves and the health consequences when we choose to bring them into our homes.  I thought, “I won’t be able to help with the event and ensure it’s success. ”

Then that small inner voice said to me, “But I’ve never been to Mexico City…  Hey… Shaklee is in Mexico and people can earn income and switch to safe Shaklee products there.”  My mind continued with the “Pros” and “Cons” checklist of “Should I go or should I stay.”

Meanwhile, my husband voiced his concerns that I could be kidnapped by one of the taxi-cab drivers that are famous for taking tourists to ATM’s and emptying their bank account.  He is always concerned for me when I travel and of course we spent 12 long years living separately.  It’s been the best part of our life together since we started our Shaklee business.   I thought, “Do I really want to worry him that way?”

And then I thought about my grandsons.  One of the biggest reasons that I am so concerned about our planet’s future.   I would miss out on their most precious growth  – right now they are 10 months and 3 years.  Ethan runs to have Mamaw hug him and Edison grins with that one bottom tooth and giggles when he catches my attention.  “How can I live without my family again?  What would life be like without them?”.

My daughter needs me right now too.  She is so relieved to have me watch the boys when she must be away.  Daycare is something the kids have not experienced and we are so grateful that we can help with their care when she needs us.  “What would she do if I’m not here to watch the boys and listen to her when she needs support and love from another mother – her mother?” I thought.

Can you guess what my decision is?  Yip…  I’m hook, line, and sinker commited to continuing on the path of my new career.  You may be asking, “Are you crazy?”  What about all that money you can make with a consulting business?”  I  will tell you what MY goals for a better life include…

1.  Help people become financially independent and money wise with a Shaklee business.  I know when I help others get everything they need in life, I’ll have everything I could ever want in mine.

2.  Bring health to people through public education about the consumer dangers that lurk in the market today and help them switch to Shaklee pure and safe products .  Shaklee has never had a product recall.

3.  Remain “Carbon Neutral” through offset projects and working from home with Shaklee which has been “Carbon Neutral Certified” since 2002.

4.  Educate parents about child safety.  Through education and product choices, my goal is to interrupt the startling statistic of childhood asthma which has increased by 166% in recent years and women that work in the home are dying at a rate 54% higher than average from terminal cancer.  The Toronto Clean Air Institute sites typical household cleaners and chemicals as the cause.

5. Replace my consulting practice income within 5 years with my Shaklee business.  In 2006, Master Coordinators AVERAGE PUBLISHED 1099 earnings were $286,000.  The Gold Ambassador program is averaging $30,000 in additional income to Masters.  We are using methods that will move the needle forward to that and beyond for us personally and our team.

6.  Stay in the race for the long haul.  I am commited to building our business now so we can enjoy residual income in a few short years.  The plate is set – Baby Boomers Want Shaklee Health and Nutrition, the Green Wave is Here, and Shaklee is expanding to 43 more countries in the next 7 years.

I am so blessed to have found such a wonderful and rewarding new life.  It is true what Roger Barnett, our CEO says, I can “Do Well by Doing Good”.

Ninety percent of people want a home business.  How about you?  Do you want to join me and build a future that will fulfill your dreams for a better life?  Would you like to align your financial future with your convictions?  Are you anxious to hedge against the financial pressures of a faltering economy?  Do you have a loved one that is chronically sick and in need of better health?  Are you concerned about your children’s future and the possibility that global warming may affect them in a dramatic way?

You can be part of the solution this Earth Day 2008.  No one person can do everything but everyone can do something.  Join us as a business owner or member and be part of the Shaklee family.  Happy Earth Day 2008!

Foot Tappin, Feel Good CEO sings “You Can Have It All”

This video makes me smile every time I watch it.  Our CEO Roger Barnett ROCKS!  He wrote the song and then plays keyboard and has made the time to become a billionaire!  Oh – and he wants Shaklee to be the first company to win the Nobel Peace Prize for our environmental good works.   I love being part of Shaklee Corporation.  We know in the Land of And – You Can Have It All.  Join us and we’ll get ya started!!

Body burden testing – Challenge #2

I believe the most important thing I can do is try to touch people’s lives and make a difference in my world by helping someone make a change for the better in theirs.  I learned years ago that it feels a whole lot better to stand for something than nothing at all.  And I also understand that it’s impossible to help someone if they won’t help themselves.  I quit trying to do that years ago….  But even if I help absolutely noone by offering this information – I know that I tried.

That’s the way I feel about making changes to reduce my carbon footprint.  I know that I can’t stop global warming – but at least I know that I’m one of the many that are working to make a difference.  I got my recycle book from our county government today and WOW what a tremendous job the authors have done!  They gave me an idea for challenge #2.

I thought I’d try to combine tips  to stop adding to your individual chemical body burden and make a change that will help the planet at the same time.  What do ya think?  I know the only author that ever got away with announcing what he was going to say is Mark Twain – but I spent years presenting in the corporate world and you tell people what you’re going to say and tell them and then tell them at the end what you just said.  Forgive me.

So I’m asking everyone that reads this – if you can’t be bothered with saving the planet – maybe you can focus on protecting yourself and saving the planet will be a nice sidebar that will make the rest of us feel that you’re at least making an effort.  It’s a win win for everyone!

Top Five Ways We Can Save Ourselves While Saving the Planet  (key points from the Recyclopedia of Anoka County, MN – with embellishment from me).

1.  Buy flourescent bulbs and save big bucks in electricity (benefit for you and the planet).  It’s illegal to put flourescent bulbs in the garbage when they finally give out.  Flourescent bulbs contain mercury and must be recycled.  Contact your local services for information to safely recycle them.

2.  In Minnesota, it’s illegal to throw mercury thermometers and thermostats in the garbage.  If a thermometer breaks contact your county waste management for information on how to protect yourself and your environment.   You can also check with state government to see if they have special instructions in the event of a mercury spill.  Just remember if you no longer want an item with mercury in your home – don’t throw it in the garbage.  In Minnesota, we’re instructed to contact our local hazardous waste facility.

3.  Dispose of any home care products that contain the following words:  Caution, Combustible, Corrosive, Danger, Flammable, Inflammable, Poison, Toxic, Warning.  DO NOT throw them in the garbage – they are Household Hazardous Material.  Instead, take them to your local Household Hazardous Waste Facility then switch to non-toxic, environmentally safe home care products (Good for You, Your Family and the Planet).  Check out the home care products I use at GetClean .  I just saw a commerical for a big brand laundry detergent (in a big red bottle wink wink) that said they are going green – incredible!  The toxic stuff in their products are some of the most dangerous.  “Your Green is Showing” is their new tagline.  Wow – get educated on this stuff… I’ve got links on my blog to look up the chemicals in your home care products.

5.  Busy parents – check your toys for lead content among other dangerous substances.  It’s in your court and it’s a fact that our government is absolutely not checking them.   Well, let me clarify – there is 1 person checking toys in Federal Government and there are no current plans to increase authority.   You can check with the Consumers Union at consumersunion.org and other web resources.   Once you know the toys are safe then talk to other parents about recycling toys by packing up the less used toys and have a toy swap with other parents.  Kids love toys whether they are shiny and new or well worn and loved.  Heck I grew up using wooden spoons as drum sticks and boxes as drums – both can be recycled.  Let’s think about reduce and reuse.

So that’s my challenge for you today.  It requires very little of you and I feel better for trying.  Go out and make a difference in your world – it’s a brand new day tomorrow and every day. Can’t remember all of this?  Then bookmark this site and keep coming back.  Add a comment or ask a question – I’d be thrilled to know that someone is actually acting on my suggestions.  I know a lot of you are reading – let me know if you’re doing!

UC Berkeley Landmark Study Published – CNN and others to air

Please forward this to everyone you care about…  CNN and the other major news outlets will be releasing this story in the coming days and weeks.  This new study is going to change the way we all think of vitamins and supplements – and the companies that manufacture and market them.

Peer Review of a recent clinical study conducted by the University of California Berkeley has been completed.  This study has been dubbed the “Landmark Study” and will be the groundbreaking baseline for future clinical studies.

Shaklee Corporation based in Pleasonton, CA came out on top of it’s game as the ONLY company that has proof  their vitamins and supplements work and have an impact on disease states.

The table below summarizes some of the key Landmark Study findings.  Read on to  access the PDF link at the end of this article for the full report.

The numbers are fascinating.  You’ll see that taking no multi-vitamin may be safer than taking other company brands.  Shaklee Corporation  came out of the study with bragging rights that it’s users had markedly lower incidence of coronary heart disease, angina, congestive heart failure, diabetes, stroke and emphysema not to mention lower homocysteine, LDL,(bad cholesterol), Triglycerides and higher HDL (good cholesterol).

Background

Dietary supplement use in the United States is prevalent and represents an important source of nutrition. However, little is known about individuals who routinely consume multiple dietary supplements. This study describes the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users, and where possible makes comparisons to non-users and multivitamin/mineral supplement users.

Methods

Using a cross-sectional study design, information was obtained by online questionnaires and physical examination (fasting blood, blood pressure, body weight) from a convenience sample of long-term users of multiple dietary supplements manufactured by Shaklee Corporation (Multiple Supp users, n=278). Data for non-users (No Supp users, n=602) and multivitamin/mineral supplement users (Single Supp users, n=176) were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002 and NHANES III 1988-1994. Logistic regression methods were used to estimate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

Results

Dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50% of Multiple Supp users included a multivitamin/mineral, B-complex, vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin E, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, lecithin, alfalfa, coenzyme Q10 with resveratrol, glucosamine, and a herbal immune supplement. The majority of women also consumed gamma linolenic acid and a probiotic supplement, whereas men also consumed zinc, garlic, saw palmetto, and a soy protein supplement. Serum nutrient concentrations generally increased with increasing dietary supplement use. After adjustment for age, gender, income, education and body mass index, greater degree of supplement use was associated with more favorable concentrations of serum homocysteine, C-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as lower risk of prevalent elevated blood pressure and diabetes.

Conclusions

This group of long-term multiple dietary supplement users consumed a broad array of vitamin/mineral, herbal, and condition-specific dietary supplements on a daily basis. They were more likely to have optimal concentrations of chronic disease-related biomarkers, and less likely to have suboptimal blood nutrient concentrations, elevated blood pressure, and diabetes compared to non-users and multivitamin/mineral users. These findings should be confirmed by studying the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of other groups of heavy users of dietary supplements.
